Report

During my placement with E1 Series, the world’s first electric powerboat championship, I had the opportunity to engage in a variety of impactful projects at the intersection of sustainability, science, and sport. Initially, I contributed through sustainability reporting and collaborating with the marketing team to design campaigns tailored to each race weekend. I worked closely with international organisations to develop communications strategies and implement sustainability activations, gaining a deeper understanding of the corporate, environmental, and sports landscapes. Additionally, I expanded my skillset through media training on-the-go, which enhanced my ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the placement was hosting high-profile panel discussions on ocean health, sustainability, the blue economy, and electric mobility—topics that align closely with my broader PhD research theme. As these discussions took place at each race location, including one where I hosted the President of the Bahamas, a perk of the job was to travel to coastal areas vulnerable to climate change. I also planned, prepared, and presented scientific content, further developing my ability to bridge the gap between academia and the sport and entertainment industries. The placement allowed me to build invaluable connections with people I would not have met otherwise, including high-level scientists at other universities. The placement also opened my eyes into how academia can support these industries and vice versa. This experience has not only expanded my professional network but has also equipped me with practical skills and knowledge that will have a lasting impact on my career post-PhD.
