Research Experience Placement Scheme
Summer Placements for Undergraduate students who are considering a research career in the Environmental Sciences.
Overview
IAPETUS2 are delighted to announce we will be running NERC’s Research Experience Placement (REP) scheme this summer, giving undergraduate students the opportunity to work within one of our universities or research institutes on a 6-8 week placement on an environmental sciences project.
The REP scheme is intended:
- to support placements for those from underrepresented demographic and diversity-related groups in environmental sciences
- to allow the development of skills to enable students to apply for a PhD in environmental sciences.
As well as providing direct experience of the research environment, IAPETUS2 will support the career development of REP students by offering mentorship and career-development support.
If you successfully complete a REP with us, and subsequently apply for a PhD with us, you are guaranteed to be longlisted in the Studentship Competition.
The IAPETUS2 Research Experience Placement scheme offers 6-8 week paid placements. Please get in touch if you have any questions about the support we can provide to enable access to a placement.
To Apply
- Please note all projects listed below will be for 6-8 weeks in length, with flexibility for part-time working, and will take place over the summer of 2023. The agreed dates will be determined between IAPETUS2 and the applicant following offer.
- If you are eligible to apply for a Research Experience Placement with IAPETUS2, please select a project from those listed below.
- Submit a completed application form and your CV to contact.iapetus@durham.ac.uk by no later than Tuesday 30th May 2023 (12pm GMT). We will contact applicants about the outcomes by the end of June.
- Complete the EDI form here.*
*Note that the EDI form is for monitoring purposes only and is NOT used to evaluate applicants to projects.
Eligibility of students
Students must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible for a REP. The students must:
- Be undertaking their first undergraduate degree studies (or integrated Masters).
- Be applying for a placement in a different department from the one where they are undertaking their undergraduate degree
- Be eligible for subsequent NERC PhD funding (Details of eligibility for PhD studentships can be found here).

How do I apply for a project in the IAPETUS2 Research Experience Placement Scheme?
Complete an application form for the project of your choice and submit this with your CV to contact.iapetus@durham.ac.uk, then complete the EDI Monitoring form. Complete all this by the deadline of Tuesday 30th May 2023 at 12 midday (GMT)
I am interested in more than one of the projects, can I apply for multiple projects?
You can apply for as many of the projects as you like. Please submit an application form for each of the projects. You only need to submit your CV and complete the EDI Monitoring form once.
I am an undergraduate student graduating this year, am I eligible?
To be eligible, you must be a registered undergraduate (or integrated Masters) student at the start of the placement. If you graduate during the placement, you are still eligible, but unfortunately if you have graduated before the placement is due to start then you are not eligible.
I am an international student, am I eligible?
If you are eligible for subsequent NERC PhD funding and are allowed to work in the UK, then you are eligible for this scheme. (Details of eligibility for PhD studentships can be found here)
